Event Recap: Tennis
Fundraiser at the Kindreds recap
Tennis players and artists combined for a successful fund-raiser
on May 15th at the ocean-front home of Dan and Sandie Kindred.
Walter Redondo, Barbara Dolan-Wilkinson, and the late Sidney
Siegel were the featured artists for the evening. Sipping wine
and nibbling the goodies, patrons contributed approximately
$3,000 in profits for the After School Tennis program. Steve and
Rosemary Ruzic of the European Cake Gallery supplied the sweets,
while Greg Frech donated beautiful cheese platters. In addition,
Noelle Adamson with New Balance donated 25 pairs of new shoes
for the children. Kevin Klabunde with Wilson Sporting Goods and
Steve Adamson's Pacific Beach Tennis Shop both donated tennis
balls for the AST program. AST coach Judy Inskeep brought three
After School Tennis students to help greet guests and assist
with the evening. AST stand-out Jovita Sanders joined our own
YTSD Gio Castellanos at the front gate to greet guests. They
managed to smile their way into hundreds of dollars of donation
drawing contributions. Zach Knapp and Adrian Rivera, students in
the Oak Grove Middle School AST program assisted patrons with
silent auction bids and answered questions from the guests. The
winning ticket in the donation drawing belonged to Daryl Olsen
who won a specially commissioned sculpture valued at $350. It
was designed by guest artist Barbara Dolan Wilkinson and made
from tennis balls donated by Wilson. The evening ended all to
soon with the sun setting over the ocean.
AST Doubles
Tournament Recap, Jan 24, 2004
With After
School Tennis, everyone is a winner. On Saturday,
January 24th, AST students from all over San Diego County met at
the
Barnes Center to try their hand at doubles. The tournament was
for entry
level players and the emphasis was on participation. Beginners
who
couldn't serve overhand served underhand. Those who couldn't
keep score
learned to do so, and students who needed reminders of where to
stand were
given assistance.
The intermediate players demonstrated how much improvement
our
students have made since starting as beginners. With the help
of 24
volunteers, over 120 students were able to participate.
Students played a
round robin format and the winners earned ribbons and
certificates. Sportsmanship award winners received certificates
for new
tennis shoes. Thanks to our many clothing donations, students
were able to
select tennis clothing to take home. Everyone took home a great
experience.
