Practicing at Home

Written by Kate Prichard

When the last school bell rang and I said goodbye to my friends, it was super surreal. I began to think that it was only a matter of time until tennis would get canceled as well. When I did get the news that I wouldn't be able to go to Barnes, I felt a surge of sadness. I really didn't know what I would do in order to stay healthy. In the beginning, I sat at home and thought: "What am I going to do?". After a couple of days I began to grow restless and I asked my parents if they could build me a hitting wall for my driveway. They said yes and my dad got to work building it.

The first week or so that I had the hitting wall were unguided. I just hit on the wall for an hour. After that, I began to receive footwork drills from Coach Luda. They helped me a lot because it started to feel like HP again. I even start the practice at 4:00, just like HP. I have been keeping with “HP” at home daily, since March 22. I think it is very important to have a schedule.

My workouts have the same principles of HP. I make sure to practice volleys, serves, ground strokes, footwork and even coordination. I also make sure to run on my treadmill for about 1 hour a week. I also stay healthy by walking around the neighborhood with my mom. (Don't worry, I'm wearing a mask.)

To finish off, I would like to say thank you to everyone who is doing their part in this crisis. To the healthcare workers and the first responders who work on the front lines. I am trying my best to do my part and I hope that you are too. Stay safe everyone. :)
